Casino Royale is a UK spy film released in 2006, the 21st installment in Eon Productions’ James Bond film series and a third screen adaptation of the 1963 novel of the same name. This is the first movie starring actor Daniel Craig as the fictional MI6 agent James Bond. The work was produced by Eon Productions for Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer and Columbia Pictures, marking the first Bond film produced by Eon with a second studio. After Die Another Day, Eon Productions decided to restart the series, allowing them to show a less experienced and vulnerable Bond character.
On March 16, 2007, Casino Royale launched simultaneously on DVD, UMD and Blu-ray discs. On the same day in the United Kingdom, the film was released on both DVD and Blu-ray. DVD and Blu-ray editions broke several sales records: Blu-ray editions became the best-selling high-definition disc ever, selling more than 100,000 copies since its release. The DVD edition also recorded the best-selling disc in the first week of release. The British DVD also sold well, selling 1,622,852 copies since March 19.
A copy of the Royal Casino Blu-ray Disc edition was distributed to the first 500,000 owners of PlayStation 3 who had previously registered accounts on the PlayStation Network. The DVD edition comes with the official music video for the film and three documentaries detailing how Daniel Craig was selected to play Bond, the recording process and an expansion of Bond Girls Are Forever – a documentary about all the Bond girls who have appeared in previous films, and combined new interviews with the cast of the Royal Casino. In the first quarter of 2007, Casino Royale topped the list of 10 high-definition movies using the best-selling Blu-ray disc.
On October 31, 2008, a 3-DVD edition of the Royal Casino was released in the United Kingdom, coinciding with the release schedule for the sequel to the film’s sequel to the Relaxation Rate (the following week in the United States). Like the product from the 2007 edition, this collection includes an audio narration, cut scenes and a storyboard comparison with the movie. A two-disc version of Blu-ray was released next in 2008 with the addition of additional, interactive material via BD-Live and the old 5.1 PCM soundtrack replaced by 5.1 soundtracks. Dolby TrueHD is similar. The Royal Casino was released for the third time in 2012 on Blu-ray with DTS audio and cut scenes, but with fewer special features than the 2008 edition.
